Someone watched your Reel to the end, tapped your profile picture and landed on your profile. You now have a few seconds: they follow, message you or tap the link, or they swipe back to the feed. Your bio is the one piece of text they will definitely read.
And what they usually read is something like “Living my best life ✨ Making the world beautiful 💫 DM to book.” Pretty, but useless: what do you sell, where, for whom, and why follow? Below: what a profile header is made of and its limits, a four-line formula, 30 examples for six niches, where to point your links, and the mistakes that quietly cost you clicks.
What the header is made of, and the limits
| Element | Limit | What to put there |
|---|---|---|
| Username (@) | up to 30 characters: letters, numbers, periods, underscores | Short and identical across networks: @northwind.home, not @northwind_home_official_store |
| Name | can be changed twice in 14 days | Brand + search term: “Northwind · Linen Bedding” |
| Category | business and creator accounts | Show it if it explains you better than your brand name |
| Bio | 150 characters including spaces, line breaks and emoji | The formula below |
| Links | up to 5 | The first shows; the rest hide behind “and 4 more” |
| Buttons | Call, Email, Directions, plus booking and ordering via partners | Only the ones you actually answer quickly |
| Highlights | the first 4–5 circles show without scrolling | Pricing, reviews, shipping, how to order |
The Name field is the most underrated line. Instagram search matches queries against usernames, names and bio text, so “Austin Family Dentist” in your name helps people find you and “Dr. Smile 🦷” doesn’t. Don’t overdo it: “Nails Austin Gel Cheap Best” looks like spam and repels people more than it helps search.
The formula: who → why you → why trust you → what to tap
Four lines of roughly 35 characters each. Not all are mandatory, but keep the order:
- Who and where. What you do, a search term, a city or neighbourhood: “Nail studio · East Austin”.
- Why you. A specific promise or the audience you serve: “Gel manicures that last 3–4 weeks”.
- What removes the risk. A guarantee, timing, payment plans, address, years in business: “Chipped in a week? We redo it free”.
- The action. What to do and where the link goes: ”👇 Open slots this week”.
Before and after:
Before: Nail artist 💅 Passion for beauty ✨ DM to book
After: Nail studio · East Austin / Gel manicures that last 3–4 weeks or we redo them free / 👇 Open slots this week
The second version has no words that would fit any nail artist in any city. That’s the test: if your bio could be pasted into a competitor’s profile unchanged, it isn’t working.

Links in your profile: where to send people
With five native links, you need a third-party link page less often than you think. Order matters: only the first link is visible; the rest need an extra tap.
- The main action: booking, ordering, the catalog. Exactly what your last bio line promises.
- WhatsApp or a messenger if most sales happen in chat.
- Maps if people visit you in person.
- Reviews or case studies.
- Your website or whatever is left.
Tag your links so you know what the profile brings: ?utm_source=instagram&utm_medium=bio for your site. Linktree or a similar page makes sense when you have more than five destinations or need click analytics, but every extra screen between a person and a purchase loses some of them.
Mistakes that cost you clicks
- A slogan instead of meaning. “Inspiring your best self” answers none of the visitor’s questions.
- “DM to book” when replies take a day. A promise in your bio is a service promise. Response-time standards are in our guide to customer service on social media.
- Hashtags in the bio. They’re clickable and send people away from your profile to other accounts’ posts. The exception is your own branded hashtag for customer content.
- An expired promo. “20% off until August 31” in October looks like an abandoned account.
- Emoji instead of words. Five emoji per line eat the limit and read as noise. One 👇 before the link works better.
- Unlabeled Highlights. Circles named ”🌸”, ”✨” and ”💕” don’t help anyone find prices or reviews. What to collect there is covered in our list of Instagram Stories ideas.
A 10-minute check
- Open your profile on a phone, not a laptop, to see where text gets cut off.
- Show your bio to someone who doesn’t know you for five seconds. They should be able to say what you do, for whom, and what to tap.
- Test all five links and every button. A dead link is worse than no link.
- Once a month, compare profile visits with link taps in your insights. Visits grow but taps don’t? The problem is the header, not the content. Where to find those numbers: our breakdown of Instagram Insights.
An honest limit: a bio converts interest, it doesn’t create it. If your grid has no posts backing up the bio’s promise, no formula will save it. Visitors scroll three posts and leave.
Once the header is done, the feed does the rest. In Repost21 your Instagram posts go out on a content calendar in the best time slots, and Luna can suggest several bio variants using the formula above and the tone from your brand knowledge base. Try it free.
